In 2010, the Committee decided that it was time to try and make a difference to the huge cat problem in Canterbury and to try and stop the spread of feline aids and leukemia. Two of our aims relate to desexing cats so this fits in with what we do.
A plan called 'The Feline Fix' was approved and initially free desexing was offered in conjunction with nine vets. Our aim was to desex 1000 male cats and to assist multi cat households to desex their cats and therefore improve their health.
1445 cats were approved to be desexed for free and about 91% of those authorised had their cats desexed.
We realise that just doing this will have little long term impact on the cat population or health in Canterbury. With this in mind, we are working with the nine vets offering subsidised desexing to those who cannot afford to get their cat desexed.
Speys are available for $40 each and neuters $20. We will send you to the closest participating vet as we believe that any pet owner needs to build a relationship with a vet.
If you have any cats that are not desexed and you can't afford the normal cost to desex, please ring us on (03) 381 0289 between 10am and 4pm weekdays. Please leave a message if the phone is busy and we will get back to you. Alternatively, e-mail us on cplcats@xtra.co.nz advising your details.
If you have any concerns regarding feline aids or leukemia, please discuss with your veterinarian. Some information is available online. Try the websites below or use google for more information.
