PRESS RELEASE                                           27 June 2010

Is your male puss looking for a ‘feline fix’?

The Cats Protection League Canterbury Incorporated has come up with just the solution. The organisation is about to embark on a free desexing programme that will change the lives of hundreds of cats throughout Christchurch.

Cats Protection League desexing campaign organiser Sandra Leys says, ‘we are targeting low income areas to provide free desexing for male cats. We’ve had a great response from all the vets that we approached and no one turned us down”. Eight veterinary clinics are taking part - Avonside Wainoni, Vets for Pets, Straven Road, Rangiora West, Springs Ellesmere Group (Halswell, Lincoln and Leeston) and At the Vets.” The participating veterinary clinics have agreed to lower their desexing costs and the Cats Protection League is picking up the tab.

“We have tried to get a good spread of vets over Canterbury, so we can send people to one close to them and hopefully they can keep up the relationship in the future.”

Aptly named ‘The Feline Fix’, the organisation aims to desex one thousand male cats once the campaign kicks off on 1 July.

“We’ve got a bequest that has been especially set aside for desexing cats,” says Sandra, “and by targeting male cats we can reduce the number of roaming entire male cats, who not only impregnate female cats, but also spread disease ― feline aids.”

Male cats are known to roam up to several kilometers from their home in search of love and can impregnate several females in just one evening.

Sandra says there will be no maximum number of cats that can be desexed. However, conditions will apply, these include the minimum age to desex, the cat is not wild, owners must have a secure way of transporting their cats (Cats Protection League are providing two cages to each clinic to lend out) and they must turn up for the vet appointment!

“Our focus will be on neutering male cats and multi cat households but we don't plan on turning anyone away.”

If you are on a low income and need help to have your cat desexed, phone the Cats Protection League office on 3810289 between 10am and 4pm weekdays.
